If is it not efficient it will show most at low speeds. Your engine has a idle stabilizer, a black box on the front top of the engine. Feb 21, 2010. #10. Re: 1989 150 mecury black max XR2. My 88 XR4 is a 2.4 wid a clamshell cowl. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. XR6 came with either 4 1/4 or 4 3/4 in lower.Nov 26, 2010 · You have lots to choose from. Any 2.0, 2.4, or 2.5 V6 LU with the right length driveshaft will bolt up. Newer is better, of course, and if you replace a 4 inch lower with a 4.5, you'll need a different prop. Yes the XR2 would rev between 5500 to 6000 compared to 5000-5500 of the standard blackmax. It is slightly ported, 200hp exhaust and jetted carbs.
